Here’s a tip: Try a tipsheet
By Ann Wylie
Tipsheets – aka how-to stories, service articles ro value-added pieces – are valuable PR tools because:
- Tipsheets position your organizations as the expert in its files.
- They make your job easier because they’re evergreen.
- Readers are attracted to the little nibbles and bites in tipsheets.
Five tips for tipsheets
Here are five ways to make your how-to stories more effective:
1. Include three to 12 items that explain how to:
- Cut costs during the recession
- Reduce gas consumption
- Or do whatever it is your organization helps people do
2. Write a headline that includes words like “how to,” “tips” or “X number of ways to….”
3. Begin each tip with an implied “you” and an action verb.
4. List your tips using bullets or numbers.
5. Consider a how-to sidebar with a newsy release.
Ann Wylie works with communicators who want to reach more readers and with organizations that want to get the word out. A full version of this article ran in the May 2008 issue of PR Tactics.

| Meet our Newest Member
Sean Bacon is the business relations representative at FirstDay Federal Credit Union. FirstDay Financial's heritage in the Dayton area goes back nearly 70 years. In 1935 the Dayton Ohio Teachers Federal Credit Union was organized to serve teachers in the Dayton school district. In 1998, the credit union bought a new 6,000 square foot headquarters building on Babbitt Street in downtown Dayton, which still serves as the operational center for the credit union.
Sean graduated from Heidelberg College in Tiffin Ohio in May of 2006. He received a Bachelor of Arts in English (writing) with an emphasis in public relations. His decision to work in PR came from a need to have a career that would allow for creative expression and continual education.
“Keeping up with trends in public relations/marketing has been a challenge, but a welcome one. In an ever changing market companies must change to allow people to continually believe in them. Researching concepts and developing campaigns is just the challenge that I needed.”
If he weren’t in PR, Sean wouldn’t stray far from the field. He said that he would probably stick to a creative field like marketing or advertising.
As much as he wanted to provide a completely selfless answer to our standard “What if you won the lottery?” question, Sean said he had to be honest. “I would probably pay off some student loans, donate a bit to a charity, spend a bit to get it out of my system and stick the rest away.
Be sure you introduce yourself to Sean at the next PRSA event and welcome him to the chapter.

| On Thursday, May 1, we held our second annual, full-day, professional development workshop in conjunction with IABC Dayton and the Greater Dayton Ad Association. More than 100 attendees got some incredible writing advice from Ann Wylie, writer and trainer extraordinaire.
The feedback from the event has been extremely positive. And I hope that you had the chance to attend and have already put to use some of the hundreds of tips and resources Ann provided.
More importantly, I hope that you were able to connect with the many members of IABC and GDAA who were also in attendance. The seminar was a great opportunity to reach out to other communicators in our area and broaden the network of professionals we know.
For those of you that could not attend, please see the Tips Article in this issue. It is a condensed version of an article that Ann wrote for PR Tactics. I would also encourage you to sign up for Ann’s email newsletter. You can get a free subscription at wyliecomm.com.
